Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass has been around for many years. It is
the most commonly used weight loss surgery in America.
The stomach can hold up to 2000 cc of fluid. During
this procedure we divide the stomach using specialized
staples and create a new stomach, or pouch, that only
holds 30 cc. This amounts eventually to about 4-6
ounces of food at a sitting. There is some rerouting
of the bowel that is required to make the bypass.
This surgery makes you less hungry.
Gastric bypass surgery results in about a 60-80%
excess weight loss. This means that if you are a
100lbs overweight you may be able to lose 60-80 lbs, dedicated individuals can lose more. Long term data of over 20 years show that most people keep at least 50% of the excess weight off. There many studies showing that this surgery is very effective at
alleviating many of the diseases caused by or
exacerbated by obesity.
